Xiamen to host contemporary art fair in June
The First Contemporary Art Fair, part of the 2019 Art Xiamen Expo, is set to take place in Xiamen, East China's Fujian province on June 6.
The three-day fair will invite nearly 80 galleries from 11 countries and regions to showcase 10,000 items from their collections in five different exhibition areas, namely, international galleries, international curators, public art, artistic designs and themed exhibitions.
The art works to be showcased at the fair not only include works by the most influential artists in China, but also those of Yayoi Kusama, Picasso, Fernandez Arman and Alex Katz.
The "Xiamen Dada", born in the 1980s, plays an important role in the history of China's contemporary art, according to Luo Wenxuan, director of the organizing committee of the Art Xiamen Expo.
Luo said that Xiamen has also nurtured many renowned contemporary artists, which wield significant influence in international communities, such as Huang Yongping, Chen Wenling and Qiu Zhijie.
Taking the opportunity of the First Contemporary Art Fair, Luo hopes to promote the development of contemporary art in Xiamen as well as in China.
The 2019 Art Xiamen Fair, covering an exhibition area of 12,000 square meters, will include a contemporary art fair and a classical art fair, and operate an art center.
Why Xiamen
-
Xiamen is one of the most economically competitive cities in China and was one of the first Special Economic Zones on the Chinese mainland. As a vice-provincial city independently listed on the State development plan, it has provincial-level authority in economic administration and local legislative power. In 2010, the Xiamen SEZ was expanded to cover the entire municipality. Today, Xiamen is a modern and international port city.
