Consumption in the coastal city of Xiamen, East China's Fujian province, was high during the Spring Festival holiday, local news reported on Feb 19.

Statistics from the city's commerce bureau show that the total sales revenue of 26 key shopping malls hit 97.22 million yuan ($15 million) from Feb 11 to 17, up 16.54 percent from the same period last year. The city's catering sector also reported a year-on-year growth of 236.23 percent, exceeding 6.3 million yuan during the same period.

In order to ensure a stable supply of food during the holiday, local authorities closely monitored food markets and price fluctuations in order to respond promptly to any problems.

Xiamen also held an array of promotional activities during the holiday. Major shopping malls in the city released more than 50 million yuan in consumption vouchers to stimulate consumer spending, while strict measures were taken by businesses to guarantee a safe and secure environment during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Statistics show that the total sales revenue of six key department stores in Xiamen expanded 62.45 percent year-on-year to 41.66 million yuan.

In addition, authorities of the city's commerce bureau have said that many residents chose to dine in restaurants due to the city's general containment of the COVID-19 pandemic. Xiamen's five key catering enterprises saw huge increases in business, growing by 236.23 percent year-on-year.
