Xiamen University launches project to attract investment

Xiamen University, based in the coastal city of Xiamen, East China's Fujian province, welcomed its 100th anniversary, and a special project was launched on April 7 to encourage its global alumni to invest in the city.
Zhao Long, Party secretary of the city, addressed the investment conference and said that Xiamen University has cultivated more than 400,000 graduates over the past 100 years, many of whom have become industry leaders.
Zhao added that through 40 years of development, Xiamen has taken the lead in boosting China's reform and opening-up, becoming a pioneer in attracting investment and improving its economy.
Currently, the city is making up efforts to advance the development of strategic emerging industries including the digital economy, biological medicine, semiconductors, the marine industry, new energy resources, new materials, and high-end equipment, to promote high-quality development in all sectors and build Xiamen into an international and modern city of innovation, entrepreneurship, beauty, and modernity, according to Zhao.
Zhang Yan, Party secretary of the university, said that it will work to build itself into a world-class university and enhance its capabilities to serve regional development and national strategies.
Zhang also called on its alumni all over the world to invest in Xiamen and offer support to the city's social and economic development.
At the investment conference, 17 innovation and entrepreneurship parks were released, and a total of 32 projects valued at 43.9 billion yuan ($6.7 billion) were signed.

Xiamen is one of the most economically competitive cities in China and was one of the first Special Economic Zones on the Chinese mainland. As a vice-provincial city independently listed on the State development plan, it has provincial-level authority in economic administration and local legislative power. In 2010, the Xiamen SEZ was expanded to cover the entire municipality. Today, Xiamen is a modern and international port city.
