Shipping giant Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) celebrated its 1 millionth TEU shipped in 2025 at Xiamen Port on Dec 24, when the vessel MSC SIXIN sounded its whistle and began loading operations at the Haitong Terminal.
The MSC SIXIN, the vessel handling this operation, is a prime example of the trend towards larger and more efficient container ships worldwide. It measures 399.7 meters in length and has a deadweight tonnage of over 200,000 metric tons.
In recent years, MSC has consistently maintained its east-west route network at Xiamen Port. Throughout 2025, the company has continued to increase its capacity deployment and actively expanded services to Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Europe.
MSC currently operates 11 calling routes at Xiamen Port, connecting key markets such as Europe, the East Coast of the United States, South America, and the Middle East. This network has established an efficient and convenient gateway to international markets for enterprises in Fujian and surrounding regions.
This milestone, in which MSC's annual container volume at Xiamen Port has exceeded 1 million TEUs — accounting for nearly one-tenth of the port's total annual throughput — signifies the deep mutual trust and highly efficient collaboration forged through the long-term partnership between the two parties.
Why Xiamen
-
Xiamen is one of the most economically competitive cities in China and was one of the first Special Economic Zones on the Chinese mainland. As a vice-provincial city independently listed on the State development plan, it has provincial-level authority in economic administration and local legislative power. In 2010, the Xiamen SEZ was expanded to cover the entire municipality. Today, Xiamen is a modern and international port city.
