A shipment of 15 containerized lithium battery energy storage systems (hereafter referred to as "energy storage containers") was loaded onto a multi-purpose vessel and set sail from Xiamen's Modern Terminal to Chile on March 25, marking the first time this year that Xiamen Port has exported energy storage containers by multi-purpose vessel.
Fujian province is a key production hub for such containers in China, known for its high output, large export volumes, and strong maritime transport demand.
In 2024, the port introduced the nation's first maritime safety transport guidelines for containerized lithium battery energy storage systems, regulating liner transport and enabling regular exports of energy storage containers.
However, with the growing variety of customized energy storage container products, existing container liner channels can no longer fully meet export demand, prompting companies to seek alternative vessel types for shipment.
To improve port clearance, facilitate cross-border trade, boost energy storage container exports, and address shipping challenges for diverse energy storage containers by different vessel types, the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Commerce and other departments have conducted research on maritime safety transport at Xiamen Port, exploring new export models using vessel types beyond container ships.
Why Xiamen
-
Xiamen is one of the most economically competitive cities in China and was one of the first Special Economic Zones on the Chinese mainland. As a vice-provincial city independently listed on the State development plan, it has provincial-level authority in economic administration and local legislative power. In 2010, the Xiamen SEZ was expanded to cover the entire municipality. Today, Xiamen is a modern and international port city.
