Xiamen transforms empty rooftops into shopping and entertainment hotspots
Once-neglected rooftops across Xiamen are being transformed from forgotten spaces into dynamic urban destinations as the city pioneers a model of renewal that brings together ecological value, commercial energy, and a human touch.
What makes the rooftop economy so compelling is how it combines local culture, trendy IPs, and immersive settings to create trendy must-visit destinations. Xiamen now has a growing network of such rooftop hubs.

DVLN PaRK alone has over 50 independent lifestyle brands, 29 of them on the sixth-floor rooftop. From coffee and cocktails to bakeries and pop-up markets, the space has hosted over 100 events and built a sustainable rooftop business ecosystem.
DVLN PaRK is a non-standard commercial space on the sixth-floor rooftop of Xiamen's old town. It brings together trendy collectibles, creative goods, and food offerings, turning the rooftop into a "wasteland utopia" for young people eager to socialize and create. With low-cost renovations, a curated mix of small stores, and a strong social atmosphere, the model offers a solution to the traffic struggles of traditional malls.
Hartanto, a Chinese-Indonesian brand owner, runs a store here. In his view, foot traffic is drawn naturally by the right atmosphere and authentic content. That sense of ease, he believes, is the most compelling thing about rooftop economy.

Shopping centers like Xiamen SM City Plaza are also embracing the rooftop economy, turning unused rooftops into lively destinations for exercise, socializing, and photo opportunities — including sky courts and trendy sports facilities. These projects add character to the city skyline while delivering steady traffic and revenue.
Why Xiamen
-
Xiamen is one of the most economically competitive cities in China and was one of the first Special Economic Zones on the Chinese mainland. As a vice-provincial city independently listed on the State development plan, it has provincial-level authority in economic administration and local legislative power. In 2010, the Xiamen SEZ was expanded to cover the entire municipality. Today, Xiamen is a modern and international port city.
