Xiamen sees record-breaking duty-free sales over May Day holiday
During the May Day holiday, duty-free shops at Xiamen Airport recorded sales of over 2.3 million yuan ($338,171), with more than 3,600 duty-free purchases. These represent year-on-year increases of 14 percent and 16 percent, respectively, as well as five-year highs for the holiday period.
Port duty-free shops are tax-free retail outlets located in designated areas of airports, seaports, railway stations, and land border crossings, catering to inbound and outbound travelers.
The duty-free stores at Xiamen Airport currently offer nearly 2,600 types of products from over 230 brands, including beauty and skincare products, premium tobacco and alcohol, and imported foods.
"During the May Day holiday, we launched promotions such as flash sales, customized gift boxes, and volume discounts in an effort to tap the potential of high-spending tourists, which helped keep our stores busy," said Chen Xiaodong, manager of the airport duty-free shop.
In-flight duty-free sales on international flights have also been significant. In-flight duty-free sales refer to the retail service provided by onboard duty-free shops on international and regional routes operated by airlines. These services offer inbound and outbound passengers a range of tax-free products.
During the May Day holiday, a total of 95 flights on international routes to and from Xiamen Airport offered duty-free goods, generating over 210,000 yuan in sales — up nearly 5 percent year on year and marking a record high for the holiday period. Currently, in-flight duty-free services are available on 26 international routes operating to and from Xiamen Airport.
Why Xiamen
-
Xiamen is one of the most economically competitive cities in China and was one of the first Special Economic Zones on the Chinese mainland. As a vice-provincial city independently listed on the State development plan, it has provincial-level authority in economic administration and local legislative power. In 2010, the Xiamen SEZ was expanded to cover the entire municipality. Today, Xiamen is a modern and international port city.
